Get down with Downcast's support for Apple's CarPlay
Already, CarPlay is integrated with a number of apps including iHeartRadio, MLB.com At Bat, Spotify, CBS Radio, Audiobooks.com, Audible, Pandora, Slacker, Vox, and more.
Now, to the growing list of apps that support CarPlay, you can add one of our favorite podcasts apps here on AppAdvice, Downcast.
Now riding on CarPlay
The popular podcast app developed by Jamawkinaw Enterprises — which has been available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch — is now offered on Apple’s iPhone-connected car infotainment platform as well.
As a result, you can now easily and safely listen to your favorite podcasts with Downcast in your CarPlay-enabled vehicle. (You can find out which cars support CarPlay by looking at Apple’s official list here.)
Note that Downcast limits lists in CarPlay to a maximum of 100 items. “This is an arbitrary decision meant to control performance and improve safety,” one of Downcast’s developers, George Cox, notes. “If this creates a problem for you, I suggest creating a playlist on your iPhone with appropriate episode inclusion settings to make a manageable list.”
Also, Downcast lists in CarPlay are limited to include only ready-to-play episodes, i.e., episodes that are downloaded, queued for downloading, or marked for streaming.
Still, Downcast is a great alternative to any of the other podcast apps that integrate with CarPlay, including Overcast, Stitcher, and Apple’s very own Podcasts.
Now with more improvements
In addition to CarPlay integration, the latest update to Downcasts delivers a bevy of improvement and fixes, as follows:
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 8.2 or later, and optimized for Apple Watch as well as CarPlay, Downcast is available on the App Store for $2.99, with in-app purchases for developer tips.
