There’s more proof that Apple is working on a unique and interesting wireless charging solution for future iPhone models.

VentureBeat has uncovered strong evidence that Apple is working with Energous Corp. to bring the company’s WattUp technology to iOS devices.

Most wireless charging solutions currently on the market require users to place their device on some type of charging pad that still needs to be plugged in. But WattUp is different and uses RF technology. There are two major parts to the system – a transmitter and receiver.

The receiver would be built into a device. One transmitter could charge up to 12 different devices simultaneously in a 30-foot area. That means an iPhone could hypothetically be charged from across the room.

Here’s a short concept video that shows how the technology could work in the future.

Another big feature in 2017?

Another big feature in 2017?

While the iPhone 7, which officially hits the market tomorrow, features a similar design to the iPhone 6 series, big changes are reportedly on the horizon.

A recent story from The New York Times recently corroborated early rumors about the 2017 device:

Apple is likely to continue making iPhones without headphone jacks, and next year’s iPhone will have a full-screen face with the virtual button built directly into the screen, according to two people at the company who spoke on condition of anonymity because the product details are private.

Wireless charging could also be part of that equation. Being able to charge my iPhone from across the room sounds exciting, and would definitely be a big step forward.
