Turn Your Words Into GIFs With the New Giphy Says App

Say It With GIFs

In addition to its main app for browsing and searching GIFs, Giphy has been offering several other apps to users who live and breathe all things GIF. There’s Giphy Keys, for searching and sharing GIFs right from the keyboard. There’s GIF Stickers, for sharing animated stickers. There’s Giphy Cam, for converting videos to GIFs. And now, there’s a new Giphy app in the block: Giphy Says, which essentially lets you turn your words into GIFs.

Giphy Says lets you record a short video in which you’re saying something and creates a looping clip out of it. The resulting clip has no audio — just like an animated GIF — but it does have text that’s a transcription of what you’re saying. Neat, huh?

Each looping creation in Giphy Says starts with the prerecording screen, where you can swipe left and right to change text styles and up or down to change filters.

Once you’re done choosing a text style and filter, just tap the center button to start recording, speak loud and clear, and tap the center button to stop recording. Note that you can record in landscape as well as portrait orientation.

After recording, Giphy Says instantly shows your looping clip with overlay text based on what you said while recording, and even animated so that the words are displayed in sync with the way they’re spoken in the clip. In case you’re wondering, the app uses voice recognition or speech-to-text technology to automatically incorporate the words you spoke into the clip’s speech bubble or caption.

You can then drag and pinch to move and resize the text, and tap the text to punctuate it (with a period, question mark, or exclamation point). Once you’re satisfied with how it looks, you can share your looping creation as a GIF or video through your favorite social media and messaging channels.

Giphy Says is the camera you talk to. Just hit record and start speaking to add some text. Then share your looping creations anywhere.

Giphy Says offers a new take on GIF and video sharing. Rather than shipping yet another Snapchat Stories clone (something a certain social networking giant is guilty of), Giphy has come up with an app that makes it quick and easy to create looping GIFs and audio-less videos with animated speech bubbles or captions that say what’s being said in the clips. With a selection of text styles and filters, it enables you to share images, statuses, greetings, and visual stories that are more fun and dynamic.

Optimized for iPhone and iPod touch, Giphy Says is available now on the App Store for free.
