The AppAdvice Week In Review
July 1, 2012
Each week we look at the stories that made news in the technology world during the last seven days. This week, the attention largely focused on Google, although Apple and Verizon made some waves too.
Google's Week To Shine
Last week, it was Microsoft’s turn to unveil their new tablet, Surface. This week, Google introduced the world to the Nexus 7 and Nexus Q, two tablets which they hope will compete with Amazon's Kindle Fire and perhaps with Apple's iPad too.
As A.T. Faust III reported:
The former, a low cost, ASUS-built tablet running Android 4.1 and featuring surprisingly good specs (including a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, 7-inch 1280 x 800 IPS display, 1GB RAM, and on-board NFC capabilities), is slated for a mid-July U.S. release. The Nexus 7 will come in two versions, selling at $200 and $250 for the 8GB and 16GB models, respectively.Meanwhile, Google also announced Google Drive for iOS and Google+ for iPad. Google Chrome for iOS also launched, which Christine Chan called "One Of Google's Best iOS Apps To Date." The iOS 6 Beta 2 Released, As Well As A Native Podcast App Just two weeks after Apple released the first iOS 6 beta, a new build arrived for developers. Apple also released a native Podcasts app for the very first time. Apple’s new Podcasts app for iOS 6 includes a “redeem” button suggesting that fee-based subscriptions could be coming this fall. The iPhone That Started A Revolution Five years ago this week, Apple’s first handset went on sale and with it they forever changed the cell phone industry. Since then, four iPhones models have followed, with the next one expected to arrive later this year. Still, if it weren’t for that first iPhone, we would have never seen the App Store, Siri, iTunes Match, and other Apple products that are so popular today.
