Heads Up! Ellen DeGeneres' chart-topping guessing game goes free for the first time ever

November 23, 2014

Heads up, game-nighters! The chart-topping multiplayer guessing game Heads Up! has just gone free for the first time ever.

Created by Ellen DeGeneres (of “Ellen” and “Finding Nemo” fame) and Impending (of Clear and Hatch fame), Heads Up has you holding your iOS device on your head as it displays a word, which you have to guess from your friends' clues.

The game lets you draw a new card just by tilting your device and record videos of your game sessions for replaying or sharing on Facebook.

Since its release in May last year, Heads Up! had been available to download from the App Store for $0.99.

But now, it's been made available to “get” from the App Store at no cost. It's unclear, though, if this is a permanent price drop or only a limited-time promotion.

So, if you haven't gotten and played the game yet (even though it had cost just a buck!), now's the perfect time to grab it for your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

Note that the initial download includes 10 free themed decks. Additional themed decks and a customizable one may be unlocked via in-app purchase for $0.99 each.

Released initially for iPhone and iPod touch, Heads Up! was updated with universal support for iPad and iPad mini in July last year. In December, Apple featured the game in the App Store Best of 2013 under the Great Multiplayer category and as the No. 2 top paid app of the year.

Currently, the game is at the No. 4 spot in the App Store’s Top Paid Apps chart.

If you want to have more Ellen-approved fun, check out Ellentube. Released late last month, Ellentube is a sort of YouTube for “hilarious and family-friendly web videos from Ellen DeGeneres and her show and users from around the world.”
