Apple announces the App Store's Best of 2014 for iPhone, iPad and Mac

December 8, 2014

Apple has just come out with its “Best of 2014” promotional features on the App Store and the Mac App Store.

For iPhone, Apple has named the brain-training app Elevate and the number puzzler Threes! as the App and Game of the Year, with Hyperlapse from Instagram and Leo’s Fortune as runner-ups.

For iPad, the image-editing app Pixelmator and the impossible puzzle game Monument Valley are the App and Game of the Year, with Storehouse and Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft as runner-ups.

For Mac, the App and Game of the Year are the note-taking app Notability and the Lara Croft franchise reboot game Tomb Raider, with the runner-ups being Affinity Designer and Transistor.

All deserving selections, if I do say so myself.

Apple’s Best of 2014 features for iPhone, iPad, and Mac also include honorable mentions of the best apps and games released on each platform this year.

Apple also presents charts of the top paid, free, and grossing titles on iPhone and iPad. Most of these are, unsurprisingly, titles released before 2014. For iPhone, the top paid app list is led by Heads Up! and Minecraft – Pocket Edition, the top free app list by Facebook Messenger and Snapchat, and the top grossing by Clash of Clans and Candy Crush Saga. For iPad, the top paid app list is led by Minecraft – Pocket Edition and Cut the Rope 2, the top free app list by YouTube and Netflix, and the top grossing list by, again, Clash of Clans and Candy Crush Saga.
