Apple Reportedly Orders 70 Million 'iPhone 8' OLED Panels from Samsung

And going against recent rumors, Nikkei report states that the OLED panels will indeed be curved:

A supply chain source familiar with iPhone designs revealed the size of the order, which was in line with an estimate by David Hsieh, senior director at research company IHS Markit. It will be the first time Apple adopts a curved OLED screen for its iPhones, marking a major overhaul and generating high expectations for the model.

“Apple has ordered 70 million units of OLED panels from Samsung this year, while Samsung is preparing to churn out as many as 95 million for Apple in 2017, in case demand exceeds expectations,” Hsieh said.

The rest of the report doesn’t offer any new tidbits but does say that the “iPhone 8” will offer some type of 3-D sensor for biometric and facial recognition technology. It will also be without a physical home button and will cost more than $1,000.

For its part, Samsung is well versed regarding OLED screen technology. The recently announced Galaxy S8 from the company sports an OLED screen.
