Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities is out with a new report (via MacRumors) that says Apple’s iPhone 8 could be the same physical size as a 4.7-inch iPhone 7. More than likely, Apple would be able to accomplish that feat by completely eliminating the phone’s bezels – as previously rumored – to fit in a 5.5-inch or larger screen into the smaller body.

While sporting a similar size as the smaller iPhone 7, the next-generation iPhone will apparently have a much larger battery.

Despite the smaller form factor, the analyst believes the handset will sport similar, or better, battery life to the current iPhone 7 Plus with a 2,700mAH cell. That’s due to a stacked logic board and the more energy-efficient OLED screen:

As battery material tech isn’t likely to see major breakthroughs in the next 3-5 years, mainboard area can only be reduced via stacked SLP, which makes space for larger battery and extended usage time. Thanks to stacked SLP, we expect the OLED iPhone to have similar dimensions to a 4.7” TFT-LCD iPhone, and have comparable battery capacity (equipped with around 2,700 mAh L-shaped 2-cell battery pack) to a 5.5” TFT-LCD iPhone. The battery life of the OLED iPhone could be better than that of the 5.5” TFT-LCD model as OLED panels are more energy-efficient than their TFT-LCD counterparts.
