Check Out This New Jailbreak-Free, Browser-Based Gameboy Emulator For iOS

February 24, 2014

Nintendo might be avoiding the App Store, but this past month alone, a handful of impressive attempts to port the developer's classic titles to iOS have surfaced online. One of the most recent, Ben Midi's Gameboy, offers users a Web browser-based emulator that can be accessed without requiring gamers to have jailbroken their iOS device or altered its time and date settings.

All you need to do is visit the link, http://www.benmidi.com/gameboy/, on your iOS device in mobile Safari, and a Nintendo Gameboy virtual interface will load up on-screen. You can then choose to play one of 13 different titles (listed below), and each one can be enjoyed using an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch (though the interface is best suited to the iPhone, we think).

Here's a list of the Nintendo titles on offer:

  • Mario Land
  • Tetris
  • Dr. Mario
  • Bomberman
  • Kirby's Dream Land
  • Kirby XXL
  • Space Invaders
  • Motocross Maniacs
  • Bomb Jack
  • Boxxle 2
  • Castelian
  • Centipede
  • Stopwatch

However, as TouchArcade rightly notes, since the website appears to be “actively hosting and providing access to these different real Nintendo games,” it's likely Nintendo will send out a cease and desist soon – so enjoy the Web emulator while you can!

Ben Midi's latest project is one of several Nintendo iOS emulators to have surfaced online in recent days. First, we heard about webNES, which offers iOS device users a similar experience for a selection of NES titles. Then, GBA4iOS got its anticipated 2.0 update, adding a new design, iOS 7 optimization, iPad support, and more.

Best of all, much like Ben Midi's Gameboy, neither webNES or GBA4iOS require users to have jailbroken their iOS device. Though in order to enjoy GBA4iOS, users will need to alter their iOS device's date and time settings.

As mentioned, you can check out Ben Midi's Gameboy now by clicking this link and loading the Web emulator up in Safari for iOS.

How do you like the new emulator?
