AIM Apps For iPad

AIM users have several options for the iPad. There are some fantastic free and paid apps. We compare the best apps out there for AIM users in this AppGuide.

Essential Apps

IM+ Pro

by SHAPE GmbH

IM+ Pro is the essential paid AIM app for iPad. The app’s greatest competitor is BeejiveIM, which is an iPad-only app. IM+ Pro is universal, so that $9.99 purchase price gets you an iPhone version too! The feature set is even more advanced than Beejive. These include voice dictation (in-app purchase), Twitter integration, Skype chat, Skype call recording, chat history within the app (or online, and not just emailing for backup like Beejive), and even more supported social networks. You can communicate with people using AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, MSN, Jabber, Google Talk, MySpace, Facebook, and even Skype! Push notifications work great. AIM+ Pro is the essential paid AIM app for iPad.

AIM for iPad

by AOL Inc.

AIM for iPad is the way to go if you don’t want to spend any money or if you just want a simpler, more straightforward app. The push notifications are reliable, ensuring you never miss a message. You can even use more than just AIM with this app. The app supports Facebook and MobileMe as well. The interface is easy to use in both landscape and portrait mode. The background is completely customizable. You can either choose one of the many built-in theme options or simply use one of your own images. AIM for iPad is the essential free app for AIM.

Notable Apps

BeejiveIM for iPad

by Beejive, Inc.

BeejiveIM for iPad connects you with more than just AIM. You can communicate with those using MSN, Yahoo, Google Talk, Facebook, Jabber and MySpace. The interface is very similar to the other AIM apps out there. We love the experience of using BeejiveIM and it really does provide a great alternative to IM+ Pro. The feature set is not quite as advanced, but it does provide a nice option for those that dislike IM+ Pro.

imo instant messenger for iPad

by imo.im

Another fantastic free option is imo instant messenger for iPad. It supports MSN, Skype, AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, Google Talk, Jabber, MySpace, and Facebook chat. Chat history is searchable within the app, which can come in handy. Push notifications are also included. Functionality is pretty barebones past that. We love the simplicity and ease of use of imo. It's a free app and worth a look.

Decent Apps

Agile Messenger HD Pro

by Agilemobile.com Ltd.

Agile Messenger Pro supports AIM, Yahoo, Google Talk and Facebook chat. The Facebook integration lets you even post on walls and news feeds. Picture and voice messaging are also supported in Agile Messenger Pro. Agile Messenger Pro is an okay app. We like it better than SimpleIM 2, but it still has a long way to go before we can recommend it.

SimpleIM 2

by Alexander Buharsky

SimpleIM 2 has some nice features, but is an app we can’t really recommend. The cost of Simple IM 2 is only $0.99. The free essential app, AIM for iPad, offers better functionality and ease of use. There is really no reason you should buy this one, with so many great free apps out there. The only supported networks are AIM and ICQ, which isn’t a bad thing for those looking to use AIM. Push notifications and all of the other barebones features are included here. SimpleIM 2 is a nice app. Right now the app is simply not worth the $0.99.
