Find Your Way

Finding your way has never been easier. Thanks to the wonders of GPS, 3G, and an iPhone, the world is more accessible to you than ever before. How can your iPhone help find your way? We walk you through our favorite apps for getting around.

NAVIGON North America

by Garmin Wuerzburg GmbH

To find your way in this world, you'll want a turn-by-turn GPS driving app. The biggest name GPS navigation company now has a North American iPhone app. The app is especially useful since it will run natively on the iPad. Navigon provides the best user experience over TomTom and its competitors. The $40 price tag is highly competitive. To find your way (at least in a car) you'll want Navigon.

MotionX GPS Drive

by MotionX™

Finding your way does not have to be costly. Navigon is a fairly expensive app. This is a more reasonably priced turn-by-turn app with voice guidance. Motion X GPS Drive is a beautifully designed app that will ensure you get to where you are going. Why choose this one over Navigon? There are a few reasons. The first is price -- this one is much cheaper. The second is storage capacity. If you are short on storage, then this one will take up less space on your device. The app does not install local maps onto your device, so a 3G connection is a requirement. Find your way with a GPS turn-by-turn app like this one.

Compass+

by La Camera et Compass

How can you find your way on foot without a compass? Compass+ is the best of the best. It is both beautiful and powerful. Find your way back to markers with ease. If you don't find the native compass to be sufficient, grab this one.

Instant distance

by Blobfish

When navigating with a compass, you may want to figure out the distance between two markers. The Instant distance app is designed to do just that. The brilliance of this app is it will compute different distances if you are walking, driving or flying. Know the distance from point a to point b in a few seconds with an app like this.

Geocaching

by Groundspeak Inc.

Need to find your way to a geocache? Look no further than the official geocaching app. You can not only find caches, but also navigate to them. Geocaches are a fun thing to track down, kind of a modern day version of hunting for treasure. Find your way and have a blast doing it.

Honk - Find Car, Parking Meter Alarm and Nearby Places

by Math Game House LLC

When you are done finding some geocaches on foot, you'll want to find your way back to your parking spot. This could be a tricky thing if your geocache had you hiking up into some distant location. The Honk app is the best of the best in the parking space category of apps. There is a built-in map with your car's location. You can also snap photos and jot down notes to help you remember your car's location. Find your way back to your car with Honk.

SPOT Connect

by SPOT LLC

When the Honk app fails, you have this hardware/app safety net handy. When geocaching you may find yourself in some crazy places. If you get completely lost or are in mortal danger you can activate the SPOT Connect. It will call out to emergency services by using a combination of GPS satellites and communication satellites. The beauty of this system is it works where your cell phone doesn't. The price for the device runs around $140 and the service is around $99 a year. Emergency services will respond appropriately. You may even be greeted by a helicopter rescue. For when you can't find your way pick up the SPOT Connect app and hardware.

Find Nearest Starbucks

by Brandon & Erik Corporation

After an exhausting round of geocaching and making your way back to your car, you'll want a refreshing Starbucks drink. Find your way to Starbucks with the Find Nearest Starbucks app. The reason you want this app over the built-in maps app is that it will provide a faster and cleaner Starbucks finding experience. It also does a nice list view with the milage to each Starbucks. Find your way to rejuvenation at a nearby Starbucks.

Find My iPhone

by Apple

After leaving Starbucks you realize you left your iPhone at the store. Well, now it is time to find your way to your now lost iPhone. The Find My iPhone app works great when you think ahead and set it up. You will want an extra iPhone or iPad handy to use this app. You'll be able to find your way to any of your iOS devices that are set up for it and you'll be able to wipe the device if you want to make sure your data is safe. Those that want to add a passcode lock can do that too. Find your way to your precious iOS devices with this app.

Wi-Fi Finder

by JiWire Inc.

For those that don't have a 3G iPad or MiFi handy you'll want to have this one handy. In order to use the Find My iPhone app on your WiFi enabled iDevice, you'll need WiFi. The Wi-Fi Finder app is by far the best app of its kind. The database is huge and the interface is fun and easy. It's also free. Find your way to WiFi with this app.
