Withings Takes The Covers Off Its New Smart Sleep System At CES

France-based Withings has a new product set to reach the market called Aura, and it’s just officially unveiled the iPhone-connected accessory, which it calls a “smart sleep system,” at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

You’ll remember that Withings has a couple of products we’ve mentioned before. There’s the Pulse activity monitor (which also offers a sleep tracking feature, a built-in pedometer, and a heart rate monitor), a Smart Body Analyzer, and the WS–30 scale, as well as the companion Health Mate iPhone application.

The latest product from Withings, called “Aura,” promises to take sleep-tracking to the next level. In the past we’ve seen iOS apps and activity-monitoring wristbands which aim to provide detailed information on one’s sleep patterns, but using the combination of a sensor plus a bedside device, Aura can keep track of its user’s heart rate, breathing cycles, nighttime movement, light and noise pollution, and room temperature.

This information is then fed into a companion iOS app (perhaps the Health Mate app itself?), which presents everything graphically.

Besides monitoring sleep, the bedside device can use ambient light to wake its user up; it also appears to change color throughout the night in order to utilize “a proven correlation between lighting wavelengths and secretion of Melatonin, the hormone responsible for the sleep-wake cycle,” Withings notes.

This device also emits soothing rhythms when Aura users fall asleep and wake up.

It’s definitely an interesting concept, and we’re excited to take a closer look at Aura as soon as possible. Withings notes that the device is set to launch in spring this year, and it’ll carry a $300 price-tag once available.
