Could Third-Party Apple Watch Faces Finally Become a Reality?
Third-party Apple Watch faces could soon become the norm, according to code recently uncovered in the first watchOS 4.3.1 beta by 9to5Mac.
According to a weekend report:
Code found on watchOS 4.3.1 suggests this could change in the future. A component of the NanoTimeKit framework, responsible for the watch faces, implements a developer tools server that’s probably designed to communicate with Xcode running on a Mac. One of its methods has a very interesting log message:
There are some important points worth considering. First, even with the code, third-party Apple Watch faces haven’t been implemented. Second, Apple could easily remove this code in future versions of watchOS.
Apple has never allowed third-party faces on its wearable device. Instead, the company has introduced new official watch faces with each version of watchOS. For example, in watchOS 4, Apple released the Siri and kaleidoscope watch faces.
With this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) just a few weeks away, we could hear more about third-party Apple Watch faces soon.
In the meantime, Steve Troughton-Smith notes the code might not mean anything:
…haven’t third-party watch face config bundles been a thing for years? I wouldn’t get too excited about a log message just yet https://t.co/Ms1pyhPaAG https://t.co/EPbSbuceD6
