The go to streaming service in America is Pandora Radio. The universal app fully supports background audio. It is a fantastic service and made even better by the iOS 4.2 update.
ZumoCast - Stream videos & music instantly
ZumoCast is a great service and app to access any kind of file on your Mac or Windows machine on your iPad. On iOS 4.2 for the iPad ZumoCast will continue streaming your music library in the background. The app can truly become an iPod replacement app now with iOS 4.2!
Plex
Plex is another app that can stream your media to your iPad. The app will also continue streaming your music in the background when you close out of the app. It is a great solution to have access to your iTunes library anywhere in the world.
Airfoil Speakers Touch
Airfoil Speakers is an iPhone app that allows you to send audio from any application on your Mac or Windows machine to your iPad (or any other AirPlay capable device.) Airfoil on the desktop uses the same technology of AirPlay and can output audio to your iPad, iPhone, and Apple TV. It can even do this at the same time! MobileMe iDisk
If you are a MobileMe subscriber you can now use your iDisk as an iPod. The app now supports playing audio in the background. The app also launches back up to the last place you left it.
DEVONthink To Go
The recently released DEVONthink To Go runs great on iOS 4.2. The app will now auto-resume where it left off, continue syncing, and all sorts of other great multitasking features. The app is a blast to run on iOS 4.2 and has become a favorite note taking app for us.
Evernote
The popular brain replacement app, Evernote, has some great iOS 4.2 features. The biggest is the ability to record audio in the background! You can now start recording audio in a note and then go into other apps to copy text for your note and the audio will continue recording! The app will also upload the latest notes to Evernote’s servers in the background now too.
1Password Pro
1Password Pro is a great app that runs on desktop computers, and iOS devices. It helps you manage all of your passwords. The app now allows you to jump in and out of it quickly through multitasking. Prior to this release you would need to enter a password each time you need to lookup something. Now you can set an interval to lock the app up.
Pastebot — Command Copy & Paste
PasteBot is still not iPad native, but it runs great on the iPad. The recent update allows you to run PasteBot in the background. It is a great way to share information with your Mac and iPad. The backgrounding abilities make this app an essential one for all iPads running iOS 4.2.
Remote
Apple has created a wonderful remote app to control iTunes and Apple TV. When you update to iOS 4.2 on the iPad jumping in and out of the app will be speedy. Apple now has the app running in the background so you can quickly get back into commanding your iTunes library or Apple TV.
Colloquy - IRC Client
IRC junkies should rejoice with iOS 4.2 coming out. Colloquy is a fantastic IRC client that now allows you to stay connected to your IRC channel even when leaving the app. Now you can stay connected while jumping around different apps on your iPad.

Skype is not yet iPad optimized, but it still runs great in the background. Many users complain about how fast it drains an iPhone’s battery, but an iPad has a seemingly endless battery so that should not be a problem here. Owners of the iPad 3G will love the latest iOS upgrade. TomTom now runs in the background. You will no longer have to worry about getting lost when wanting to multitask in the car. The app will continue to speak directions to you. The app also auto-resumes very quickly now.
We Rule Deluxe for iPad
WeRule fans should also enjoy the latest iPad update. You are now able to jump in and out of any of the “WeApps” quickly. The apps all support fast app switching. The biggest downside of these server side games is the long load time. Now with iOS 4.2 you only need to load it once!
