Air Hockey For iPad
Air hockey and the iPad were made for one another. The large screen size enables you to compete head-to-head in person. There is not as much of a need to dish out hundreds of dollars on a nice air hockey table now that the iPad can do the job. We take a look at some of the best air hockey apps for the iPad in this AppGuide.
Touch Hockey Extreme: FS5
Touch Hockey Extreme is hands down the best air hockey app for the iPad. Many of the other apps lack the fluidity required for a great gaming experience. The developers have beautifully recreated the sensation of playing air hockey in this app. The physics, sounds, and graphics are top notch and make this app a must-have. You are able to theme the table using five different table themes and six different paddle colors. Other options include instant replays, game perspective, and one or two finger paddle control. Game Center support is included, but we still are waiting for multiplayer support over Game Center. You are able to play in 1 player, 2 player, or Bluetooth connected 2 player modes. The other weakness of the app is the difficulty levels. You can choose between just three different difficulty levels, whereas many of the other apps have more extensive difficulty levels. Touch Hockey Extreme is the best in class and a must-have for every iPad owner.
Glow Hockey 2
Glow Hockey 2 HD is the best alternative to Touch Hockey Extreme. The iPad can only be used in portrait mode, not a huge problem, but something to be aware of. Glow Hockey 2 HD matches the essential app in fluidity. The puck glides across just as it would on a real table. The reason this app shines is the graphics and customizability. You can choose between original, version 2, table hockey, hot chilli, greenfield, shining blue, jewel, soccer, doodle, and traffic tables. Each player has four different paddle options and four different puck options. Many of the themes and particle hits make you feel like you are playing air hockey in the world of Tron. Unique to this game is the championship mode. Instead of just doing single games you compete in a championship. Glow Hockey 2 HD is the best alternative to the essential app and definitely worth a look.
Glide Hockey HD
Glide Hockey HD is your free ad supported option. Unique to this game is the ability to have from one to seven pucks on the table at a time. You can customize the difficulty level from bad to amazing and change your paddle size. The game supports both one and two player modes. The pucks move very fluidly across the table. We would love to see a paid version of this app to get rid of the ad-mob empowered ads. A great app for those looking for a freebie.
1on1 Action Hockey HD
1on1 Action Hockey HD takes you out of the clean room and into a rougher environment. Rock music is played to match this style of playing. There is no customizing in this app, what you see is what you get. You are able to play against the computer or against another person. There are no difficulty settings included for one player mode. If you are looking for a grittier take on air hockey, then this app is for you.
Super Hockey
Super Hockey is your basic, no-frills version of air hockey for iPad. We love the fit and finish of this app. The graphics, puck movement, and sound are all top notch. If you are not looking for a lot of customization and extra features, then this is the app for you.
Air Hockey
Air Hockey, which has been getting fantastic reviews, did not perform well in our testing. Even when using an iPad 2, the puck movement was jittery. The resulting games were not as fun and at times frustrating. The one area the app does shine is in the difficulty settings. You can play against a computer set to kiddie, easy, medium, hard, expert, or insane. You can also play with two pucks instead of one. Overall, this is an almost-great app that is plagued by jittery pucks.
