Skateboarding Games For The iPhone
There are tons of different skateboarding games for the iPhone and even a few for the iPad. There are some that take the serious approach and some that are more goofy. We sort through and compare the best ones out there in this AppGuide.
Rat On A Skateboard
Rat on a Skateboard provides some good clean fun. Yes, even playing as a rat can be clean. The game is a retro-styled adventure game. The app features three game modes including power stunts, banana harbor, and challenges. The app lets you do some cool tricks in the air. The game includes nearly endless content because of the unique randomly generated tracks. This is the essential game for non-serious skateboarding folks. If you skateboard in real life you may want to look at our other essential app. For most people this will be the skateboarding app to have!
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 is more of a traditional skateboarding game. The game lets you skate as Tony or 12 other pro skaters. The app takes you inside 13 different skating environments. Inside these levels you master as many tricks as you can and earn some virtual money that can be used to buy moves or boards. The game is loaded with content to keep you entertained. It is also a great one for those that remember the originals back on the Nintendo 64 and Playstation consoles. The iPhone version is a ton of fun and we can only hope an iPad version is in the works.
Touchgrind
Touchgrind lets you actually skateboard with your fingers! Instead of controlling a skater you simply put your fingers on the board and skate. The app includes 12 boards, three game modes (warm up, jam session, and competition), and tutorial videos. The app packs in great graphics, sound, and realistic physics. The app will allow you to perform a ton of different tricks including crooks, kickflips, heelflips, ollies, combos, and many more! There is an iPad version available too. If you want to learn how to skateboard with your fingers, this is the app for you.
Skate It by EA
Skate It by Electronic Arts is the closest alternative to the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater app that we could find. The app is a great buy at only $0.99. Skate It includes career mode, replay cameras, intuitive gesture/accelerometer controls and much more. The graphics are simply beautiful and some great updates are on the way. The app was not as fun for us as the Tony Hawk game, but still a nice option out there.
Stickman Skater
Stick Skater is a retro-styled skateboarding game. The app includes six skaters, beginner/advanced modes, over 1000 trick combos, and a two player mode. The developer also recreated six different skateparks for this game. The app is easy to start playing and becomes more and more fun as you learn to master the tricks. Fans of Rat on a Skateboard will love this one! Stick Skater is not quite as good as the essential ones, but still a great buy.
Pocket HalfPipe
Pocket HalfPipe is an arcade-style skateboarding game. The app includes tons of features including GameCenter support, Retina support, iPod library integration, and boards/moves that you can unlock. The coolest thing is you can actually customize your character! If you have always dreamed of being a skateboarder, now you can be (well, virtually that is). The app is extremely addictive and a great buy at only $0.99. Those looking for an addictive and well-crafted game should pick this one up today.
Bunny Jumper LITE
Bunny Jumper is a decent game for skateboard fans. The concept is fun … skate and jump your way past the countless bunnies in your path. The graphics are very cute and at times inspire a chuckle. The app is in a different class from the other ones in this guide, not as good, but still a great free download. Those looking for a nice free game should download this one immediately.
PureSkate
PureSkate has the look of a Tony Hawk game and the controls of Touchgrind. If you think that combination is a good one, then you will love this app. Although game play is decent, PureSkate offers no wow factor that would keep someone coming back for more. While I think that the control system is cool, I do believe that it is more suited for a game like Touchgrind and just works awkwardly in this game. Finally, the main problem with PureSkate is that it just needs more of everything. Until that happens, I would say to wait on this one.
